How the conversion works

An hourly rate becomes an annual salary by multiplying it out over the year: the hours you work in a week, times the number of weeks you are paid for.

annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per year

The standard full-time assumption is 40 hours a week across 52 weeks — 2080 hours a year. Going the other way, divide the salary by the same number of hours.

Worked example: $25.00 an hour

At $25.00 an hour for 40 hours a week, a week's pay is $1,000.00. Over 52 paid weeks that is $52,000 a year — $4,333.33 a month, or $2,000.00 in each of the 26 bi-weekly paychecks. After federal income tax and FICA, a single filer in a state with no income tax takes home about $43,962 of it.

Frequently asked questions

$25.00 an hour is how much a year?

$25.00 an hour is $52,000 a year before tax, working 40 hours a week for 52 paid weeks. That is $4,333.33 a month or $2,000.00 every two weeks.

How do I convert a salary back to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by the hours you actually work in a year. At 40 hours a week across 52 weeks that is 2080 hours, so $52,000 ÷ 2080 = $25.00 an hour.

Should I use 52 weeks or fewer?

Use 52 if your paid time off is included in your rate, which is the usual case for salaried roles and for hourly roles with paid leave. If you take unpaid weeks, reduce the number — 50 paid weeks lowers the annual figure by about 4%.

Is this before or after tax?

Before tax. It converts gross pay between periods. On $52,000 a single filer in a state with no income tax keeps about $43,962 a year after federal income tax and FICA.
