How California paycheck taxes work
California uses its own income tax brackets. Every California employee still pays federal income tax on income above the $16,100 standard deduction (single), 6.2% Social Security up to $184,500, and 1.45% Medicare on all wages. This is the FTB's own method for estimating 2026 California tax: the 2026 standard deduction ($5,706 single, $11,412 married filing jointly and head of household) applied against the 2025 tax rate schedules. The FTB's 2026 Form 540-ES instructions direct filers to take the 2026 standard deduction at line 2b and then "figure your tax ... using the 2025 tax table", because the 2026 indexed brackets are not yet published. Schedules X, Y and Z are reproduced exactly from the 2025 California Tax Rate Schedules. SDI (1.2%) and the 1% mental health services tax above $1 million are not modelled.
California 2026 tax brackets (single)
| Rate | Taxable income |

| 1.00% | up to $11,079 |
| 2.00% | $11,079 – $26,264 |
| 4.00% | $26,264 – $41,452 |
| 6.00% | $41,452 – $57,542 |
| 8.00% | $57,542 – $72,724 |
| 9.30% | $72,724 – $371,479 |
| 10.30% | $371,479 – $445,771 |
| 11.30% | $445,771 – $742,953 |
| 12.30% | over $742,953 |
California applies these brackets after its own standard deduction of $5,706 for single filers ($11,412 married filing jointly), which is separate from the federal one.

Yes. California uses its own income tax brackets. Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) apply on top of it.

About $58,665 per year for a single filer in 2026 — roughly $2,256 per bi-weekly paycheck — after $7,670 federal tax, $5,738 FICA and $2,928 California tax. That is an effective tax rate of 21.8%.
